How to Prepare for an Ice Climbing Adventure

People who have climbed ice before know what an exhilarating and breathtaking workout it can be. If you are just starting out with ice climbing, keep in mind these tips as you plan an excursion.

First, find a partner to join you on your ice climbing adventure, because it’s safer, easier, and more fun to go with someone else. Also, make sure to get your ice climbing tools out the night before to familiarize yourself with them and get them ready for the climb. Sharpen picks or other tools that need sharpening and sand any rust off the metal.

Wake up early, as early as 4 a.m., in order to get to your ice climbing site before dawn breaks. You usually want to avoid climbing ice pillars that have been melting in direct sunlight because pieces are more likely to break off, causing a safety hazard. Lastly, dress appropriately for the frozen conditions, and prepare to use your brute strength as you swing your picks and kick your spiked feet into the ice. Once you finish your ascent, rappelling down the ice sheet is quick and fun.
