Edwin Hammond Meredith enjoys a wide variety of physical activities. In addition to surfing, snowboarding, and climbing, Edwin Hammond Meredith likes to spend time refining his skateboarding skills.

Skateboarding is one of five sports scheduled to debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The inclusion of skateboarding is emblematic of a historic decision made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reach out to the global youth population. Like sport climbing, another new sport set for Tokyo, skateboarding will necessitate the construction of multiple competition venues in urban areas of the city. An estimated 80 athletes, both men and women, will compete in a series of park and street skateboarding disciplines.

In 2014 the committee passed regulations allowing local organizing committees to propose events with a rich native history and modern popularity, another step in attracting a younger audience to the Olympics. The bid to include skateboarding received unanimous approval from the IOC.
